Meet Mark – Development Manager
Describe yourself in 3 words.
“Stoic, clever(ish), nerd.”
Where did you grow up?
“I grew up in St. Charles, MO but moved to San Diego, CA when I was 20. More of who I am is influenced by SD than STL.”
What do you do at Matchbox Design Group?
“I am a technical project manager and am currently assisting the development team with internal/external communication.”
What do you like most about working here?
“The culture. Everyone I’ve met is kindhearted and open to working together to find the best solutions whether we’re working for a customer or on our own projects internally.”
What did you do before working at Matchbox Design Group?
“A lot tbh. I was a photojournalist in the US Navy for 5 years. Then I was a web developer who built e-commerce websites for a few years after college. I co-founded an e-commerce business with a few friends of mine (https://www.barebonesbroth.com/). Since then I’ve been doing digital/technical project management in the web industry.”
What do you do in your spare time?
“I love to listen to music (almost all types). I’m also a nerd and enjoy reading or playing games with friends. If it’s nice out, you’ll find me out in the sun somewhere exploring whether it’s a backstreet or the backcountry. If it’s the backcountry I’ll more than likely have my camera with me. While I gave up photography as a job a long time ago, I’m forever in love with the art form and am always looking for perfect light.”

Favorite St. Louis activity, restaurant, or spot?
“I don’t know the city well enough yet to have many favorite places. However, if I had to choose one it would either sitting in the stands at either a Blues or Cards game. I may have left Missouri for a number of years but love for STL sports never left me.”
What digital/design/dev trend are you the most excited about these days?
“The convergence of design/dev tools. Avocode and similar products are very intriguing to me at the moment. It feels like we’re only a few years away from programs like this doing a lion’s share of our initial front-end work.”
Special talent you have?
“I have a special talent for getting people lost when my glasses fog up in the backcountry.”
Famous person, you’ve met?
“I once met The Doctor. She was pretty rad tbh.”
What’s something awesome about you that no one else knows?
“I once thru-hiked the John Muir Trail (southbound from Yosemite to Mt Whitney). My trail name was “Foggy”. (see previously listed special talent for more information)”
