Matchbox Careers
Digital Strategist
Job Type: Full-time, remote
Overview
Search has changed more in the last three years than in the decade before it. Buyers now get answers from both Google and AI platforms. Matchbox Design Group is looking for a Digital Strategist who is excited by that shift and what’s to come.
This role focuses on helping our clients get found, trusted, and chosen across traditional search, AI-driven answer engines, and paid channels. You’ll track trends and data, optimize content and campaigns, recommend strategic opportunities, and help grow measurable ROI for our clients. We strongly favor people who actively use AI to work smarter, faster, and more creatively.
Benefits
- 100% remote position
- Dedicated St. Louis office available as needed
- Half days every other Friday
- Paid week off between Christmas and New Year’s
- Generous PTO policy
- $1,000 yearly budget for industry conferences or other learning opportunities
- 401(k) with 4% matching
- Health, life, dental, and vision insurance
- Disability insurance
- Flexible schedule
- Parental leave
- Referral program
The Role
You’ll join our Digital Marketing team, where your primary focus is executing SEO, AIO (AI Optimization), content, and paid media strategies for a portfolio of clients, with real opportunities to help shape and develop those strategies as you grow. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of SEO fundamentals, hands-on paid media experience, a genuine curiosity about how AI search is changing discovery, strong communication skills (internally and with clients), and the organization to manage multiple projects at once.
Paid media is a core part of this role. You’ll plan and run campaigns on Google Ads, Meta, and LinkedIn. Because many of our clients blend organic and paid, we need a strategist who understands both and how they connect.
Above all, we’re looking for someone curious and proactive, who is eager to learn, experiments with new tools, and brings fresh ideas to our weekly strategy meetings.
Qualifications
Required
- 2–4 years of experience in digital marketing with a strong foundation in SEO and hands-on paid media experience, preferably with B2B clients or an agency
- Proven track record of improving organic visibility, traffic, and conversions
- Solid understanding of Google’s E-E-A-T principles and how to build them into content, author profiles, and site structure
- Foundational understanding of how AI search (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) is changing the way people find brands, and the curiosity to keep learning as it evolves
- Familiarity with technical SEO fundamentals: site architecture, internal linking, crawlability, Core Web Vitals, and structured data/schema markup
- Hands-on experience building, managing, and optimizing paid campaigns in Google Ads (Search, Performance Max, Display, YouTube), Meta Ads (Facebook/Instagram), and LinkedIn Ads
- Strong analytical skills and hands-on experience with GA4, Google Search Console, and Looker Studio (or similar reporting tools)
- Proficiency with SEO tools such as Semrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, and Yoast or Rank Math
- Comfort working in WordPress
- Daily, practical use of AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, etc.) for research, analysis, content workflows, or automation, along with the judgment to know where human expertise still matters
Nice to Have
- Google Ads or Google Analytics certification
- Experience with conversion rate optimization (CRO) and landing page testing
- Hands-on AIO / GEO experience: improving and tracking how brands are selected and cited in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini
- Familiarity with local SEO and Google Business Profile management
- Experience building AI-assisted workflows, prompts, or custom GPTs/agents to streamline repeatable tasks
- Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS
Responsibilities
- Execute SEO, AIO, and paid media strategies, and contribute to their development, to increase qualified traffic, visibility, and demand generation for our clients
- Conduct keyword, topic, and search-intent research, including the conversational queries people ask AI tools
- Plan and optimize content for both traditional rankings and AI citation: clear answers, strong structure, entity coverage, and demonstrated E-E-A-T
- Perform technical SEO audits and recommend fixes, including schema markup, site speed, indexation, and internal linking
- Monitor client visibility across Google search, AI Overviews, and major AI answer engines, and report on what’s changing and why
- Be able to provide insightful reporting that ties search performance to business outcomes, not just rankings
- Collaborate with our content, design, and development teams to implement recommendations on client websites
- Run paid media accounts on Google, Meta, and LinkedIn, including campaign setup, optimization, and budget and ROAS management
- Use AI tools to accelerate research, analysis, and reporting, and share what works with the team
- Stay ahead of algorithm updates, AI search developments, and industry trends, and bring recommendations to weekly strategy meetings
Personal Skills
You’re a great communicator.
You can answer difficult questions on the fly and summarize complex conversations in a few clear sentences. You can explain what AI search means for a client’s business in plain language, and you help others express their own thinking.
You’re autonomous.
You see problems and get to work solving them. You’re comfortable trying things you’ve never tried before, and you take responsibility for every part of the success of your work. Autonomy doesn’t mean working in a silo, though: you check in with teammates on workload and workflow, keep an eye on client budgets and tasks, and avoid overstepping or duplicating effort.
You’re an AI-forward thinker.
You don’t just use AI tools; you figure out how to make them useful. You experiment, build repeatable workflows, and know when an output needs a human eye before it goes to a client.
You’re reliable and detail-oriented.
You’re a process nerd who loves systems. You pay attention to specifics and don’t let details slip through the cracks. You can manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize effectively.
You’re adaptable.
Search is evolving fast. You’re energized by change, not rattled by it, and you quickly adjust your approach when the data or the landscape shifts.
You’re empathetic and comfortable addressing conflict.
You challenge directly and care personally. You know how to frame a difficult situation to avoid misunderstanding, name problems, and move toward a solution. You bring optimism, clarity, and calm.
You love great digital work.
Maybe you’ve done some development, branding, or design work yourself. You don’t need to be an expert, but you understand the broad strokes of design, development, content strategy, and you can translate complex technical language into simple terms.
You have a sense of urgency.
You keep important deadlines on your radar at all times and can respectfully help the rest of the team stay on track.
