From Photoshop to Sketch and Beyond: The Evolution of Our Design Toolkit
Our design journey has been a winding one, with various tools and software coming in and out of the picture. We started out using Photoshop, which, while a powerful image editing tool, was never truly designed for the specific needs of web and UI design. As the industry evolved, we transitioned to Sketch, a tool that quickly gained traction in the design community for its vector-based capabilities and intuitive interface.
However, as our team grew and our projects became more complex, we found ourselves facing some limitations with Sketch. The fact that it was a native Mac application meant that our Windows-based designers were left out in the cold, unable to fully participate in the design process. Additionally, the collaboration features, while present, were not as seamless as we had hoped, especially as we shifted to a more remote-centric work environment.
It was at this juncture that our UI/UX designer, Alex Shaw, stepped in and made a compelling case for transitioning to Figma. As someone who had previously worked with Adobe XD, Alex had a unique perspective on the design tool landscape and could see the potential that Figma offered.
Why Figma Stands Out
The decision to switch to Figma was not one we took lightly, but the benefits it has brought to our design process have been undeniable. One of the key factors that drew us to Figma was its cross-platform compatibility, allowing our entire team, regardless of their operating system, to seamlessly collaborate on design projects.
As Alex mentions in the podcast, the collaborative nature of Figma has been a game-changer, especially in our remote-first work environment. The ability for multiple team members to work on the same file simultaneously, leaving comments, and tracking changes in real-time has streamlined our design workflow and fostered a more cohesive and efficient design process.
Exploring Figma’s Key Features
While collaboration is a standout feature of Figma, the tool’s versatility is what truly sets it apart. Figma has evolved far beyond a simple design tool, offering a comprehensive suite of features that serve the diverse needs of our design team.
Auto Layout
One of the most impressive features of Figma is its Auto Layout functionality. As Alex explains, Auto Layout allows designers to create dynamic components that automatically adjust to changes in content, making the process of designing responsive layouts a breeze. This feature has been a game-changer for our team, as it has significantly reduced the time and effort required to create multiple variations of a design, ensuring that our work is adaptable across different screen sizes and devices.

Vector Prowess
Figma’s vector capabilities have also been a major draw for our team. As Alex mentions, the tool’s “vector networks” allow designers to create complex shapes and illustrations without the hassle of manually connecting vector points. This has been particularly useful for our in-house icon and branding design work, as it enables us to create high-quality, scalable assets directly within Figma, eliminating the need to switch between multiple design tools.

Prototyping and Animation
Another standout feature of Figma is its robust prototyping and animation capabilities. While Figma may not be as advanced as dedicated tools like Adobe After Effects, its built-in prototyping features, combined with the power of plugins like Fig Motion, allow our designers to create interactive, high-fidelity prototypes that effectively communicate the intended user experience to our clients and development team.

Plugins and the Figma Community
One of the most exciting aspects of Figma is its thriving plugin ecosystem and the vibrant community that surrounds it. As Alex highlights, the Figma community is incredibly active, with designers and developers constantly creating and sharing new plugins and resources that enhance the tool’s capabilities.
From automation tools like Automator to theme management plugins like Themer, the Figma plugin ecosystem has become an invaluable resource for our team, allowing us to streamline our workflows and unlock new creative possibilities. The fact that Figma actively engages with its community, often implementing user-requested features, further solidifies its position as a design tool that truly listens to the needs of its users.

Navigating Figma’s Limitations
While Figma has been a transformative tool for our design team, it’s important to acknowledge that no software is without its limitations. As Alex pointed out, one of the potential drawbacks of Figma is its reliance on a web-based, Chromium-based architecture, which can lead to increased memory usage, especially when working with large files containing thousands of components.
To mitigate this challenge, our team has developed strategies to manage our Figma files effectively, such as separating components into multiple files and leveraging Figma’s variant features to reduce duplication. Additionally, we’ve found that the regular updates and improvements made by the Figma team have helped address many of the initial limitations we encountered, further solidifying our confidence in the tool.
The Future of Design Tools
As we look to the future of digital design, it’s clear that Figma is well-positioned to continue its dominance in the industry. The tool’s focus on collaboration, versatility, and community engagement has made it a go-to choice for design teams of all sizes, and the ongoing development and innovation from the Figma team suggest that it will only continue to grow and evolve.
For us at Matchbox Design Group, Figma has become the cornerstone of our design process, enabling our team to work more efficiently, collaborate more effectively, and deliver exceptional results for our clients. Whether you’re a seasoned designer or just starting your journey, we highly recommend exploring the power of Figma and the transformative impact it can have on your design workflow.
