Why It Can Take Multiple Years to Complete Your Website

Since we re-designed our website, people often ask us if we did it in honor of our 10-year anniversary. That could be a good reason, we suppose. But what most people don’t realize is that we have been working on re-designing our company’s website for the past three years. Yes, three years. Maybe even longer. This is the sixth iteration of the Matchbox Design Group website and the third presence we have built in WordPress.

The process is generally lengthy because your site needs to evolve with your company. When you are constantly confronted with new trends and ideas, it makes it hard to commit to one thing.

Over the past year, we were working on some marketing materials with new fonts — including Playfair Display, a Google Font, that was very bold, yet still friendly and inviting. It was these things — and our mixing of gradients and other elements of the design language that led us into what is now our new website.

When you spend all day building, designing and developing websites, you always find new ideas that you want to implement on your own website.

Why It Doesn’t Have To Take Multiple Years

Since we keep the lights on by servicing client work, our internal projects, like your own website, tumble to the bottom of our workload pile. The good news is that you can do it — you can redo your agency website.

The better news is that it doesn’t have to take you that long. If it has taken a year, or a few, don’t fret. We’ve been there, and we’ll share what we learned in the process in this multi-part blog post series.

The Old Matchbox Design Group Website

Before we get too far into the details, we’ll show you the quick “before-and-after” shots. You’ll see our starting point and then our “destination.” And, yes, the “journey” (a.k.a. the following posts in this series) will guide you into the nitty gritty design and development details.

You’ll hear straight from the designers and dev guys who made the new Matchbox Design Group website all happen.

This website itself was supposed to be a one-page site that acted as a placeholder until we built the rest of the templates out. As time goes on and things aren’t built, the interest in the design and features wane and you begin to question the direction. This site you see below served us well. We got many compliments on it throughout it’s nearly 2-year existence.

Meet the New Matchbox Design Group Website

Now that you’ve seen the old Matchbox Design Group website, you can skip to the results. The pretty pixels, the rad animation and the killer content that is our current website.

But don’t get too cozy with it.
We’re probably already in the process of ideating a new one.
Just give us a few months.
