Meet Jim Courtois, Front-end Developer
Where did you grow up?
“I grew up in North County in Florissant, MO.”
What do you do at Matchbox Design Group?
“I am the front-end developer and I help out with web support.”
What do you like most about working here?
“As a developer, I like the high level of technical expertise that goes into building our websites. As a team, I feel like we can build anything and take it to its full potential.”
What did you do before working at Matchbox Design Group?
“I actually started out as a graphic designer about 10 or so years ago. Along the way, I worked for a couple tech start-ups where virtually all of my design work involved websites and apps. That’s when I started teaching myself how to code. I started taking on front-end developer roles around 2014 and I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can ever since
What do you do in your spare time?
“I am a big foodie, so my girlfriend and I cook dinners at home and try new restaurants often. I like to watch NHL games and even play a little ice hockey whenever I can. On the weekends, I volunteer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis.”
Favorite St. Louis activity, restaurant or spot?
“My favorite park is Tower Grove. My favorite bar is Friendly’s (a total dive.) My favorite lunch spot is Guerrilla Street Food. One of my favorite dinner spots is The Vine on South Grand.
What is excited about new trends?
Digital/design/dev trend you are most excited about these days?
“To me, the trends around responsive design are the most interesting. The biggest question in web these days is how to build one website that looks good on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops with screen resolutions from 320×480 up to 5120×2880.”
Special talents and personal questions
Special talent you have?
“I have a few random talents. I am a good sketch artist. I am decent ice hockey player. I can juggle. I know some wicked yoyo tricks. I’m quite the chef and I can even bake.”
Famous person you’ve met?
“I went to a showing of “A Clockwork Orange” that had a Q&A with Malcolm McDowell (the British Actor and main character). He was really crass and kind of mean, it was great.”
What’s something awesome about you that no one else knows?
I paid off my entire student loan debt 6 months after college with a single check of my own money. It was devastating and liberating. (But primarily devastating.)
